  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, loosely packed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or more, to taste)
  • 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 6–8 lemons)
  • 6 cups water, plus more for adjusting sweetness
  • Ice, for serving
  • Fresh strawberries and basil sprigs, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the strawberries and basil thoroughly. Hull and roughly chop the strawberries. Combine in a blender.
  2. Add about 1 cup of water and blend until smooth to create a puree.
  3. Strain the puree through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher to remove seeds and pulp.
  4. Add sugar, lemon juice, and remaining 5 cups of water to the pitcher. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, and adjust sweetness or tartness to preference.
