Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup unsweetened black cocoa powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
- Food coloring (optional, for extra spooky effects)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and black cocoa powder until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, mix together buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, mixing until fully incorporated.
- Slowly pour in boiling water, stirring gently to create a thin batter.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool completely before removing from pans and frosting.
- Frost with cream cheese or chocolate buttercream, dyeing the frosting black with gel food coloring for a spooky effect.
Notes
- Use gel food coloring for vibrant black frosting without thinning the icing.
- Decorate with edible glitter, shimmering sprays, or spooky decorations like edible spiders or candy eyes.
- Keep the cake covered in an airtight container or refrigerated if not served immediately. Bring to room temperature before serving for best flavor.
