- 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 small bell pepper, diced (optional)
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Hamburger buns, for serving
- Optional toppings: cheese, pickles, sliced onions
Instructions
- Gather all ingredients and chop the onion and bell pepper if using. Prepare any additional toppings for serving.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef or turkey and cook until browned, about 5β7 minutes. Break apart the meat with a spatula as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in chopped onion and bell pepper. Cook until soft, about 3β4 minutes. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
- Mix in ketchup, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer for 5β10 minutes until flavors meld. Adjust seasonings if needed.
- Toast hamburger buns lightly if desired. Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture onto the buns. Add optional toppings like cheese or pickles. Serve immediately.
Notes
- You can prepare the filling ahead of time and store in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
- Reheat thoroughly on the stove over low heat or in the microwave.
- For longer storage, freeze in portions for quick reheating.
