  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Optional: fresh thyme or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Start by combining ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onions, egg, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce in a mixing bowl. Mix gently until all ingredients are evenly incorporated, then form into 4-6 oval-shaped patties. Set aside.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil or butter. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden-brown and cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add more butter if needed and sauté sliced mushrooms until tender and golden. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir to coat. Gradually pour in beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add herbs like thyme for extra flavor and simmer until gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Adjust seasonings with salt and pepper.
  4. Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet, spoon the mushroom gravy over them, and heat together for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to the ground beef mixture.
  • Use fresh herbs like thyme or parsley for garnish or added aroma.
  • For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with cornstarch or gluten-free flour.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on stove or microwave.
