  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g boneless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 200g plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated ginger
  • 400g canned crushed tomatoes
  • 150ml heavy cream
  • Salt to taste
  • Cilantro leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the plain yogurt, lemon juice, ground cumin, garam masala, turmeric, and chili powder. Add the chicken pieces, ensuring they are well coated. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade, shaking off excess, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the remaining butter and sautรฉ the finely chopped onion until translucent. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for another minute until fragrant. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Return the cooked chicken to the skillet. Stir in the heavy cream and simmer on low heat for 10 minutes to meld flavors. Adjust salt as needed.
  5. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve hot with basmati rice or naan bread. Enjoy your homemade butter chicken!

Notes

  • Use skinless chicken thighs for juicier results.
  • You can adjust spice levels by increasing or decreasing chili powder.
  • Marinate the chicken for at least 30 minutes for optimal tenderness.
  • Simmer gently to prevent the cream from curdling and to enhance flavor.
