- 1 lb ground beef or turkey
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup chopped bacon (optional, for extra flavor)
- Chopped chives or green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Boil peeled and cubed potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain and mash with butter and milk until smooth. Mix in sour cream, salt, and pepper.
- In a large skillet, sauté chopped onions and minced garlic until fragrant. Add ground beef or turkey, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread cooked meat evenly in a greased casserole dish. Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
- Spoon mashed potatoes over the cheese layer and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Sprinkle additional cheese and bacon bits if desired. Bake for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden. Garnish with chopped green onions or chives before serving.
Notes
- You can substitute ground chicken or plant-based meat for a vegetarian version.
- For even more flavor, mix in herbs or additional seasonings with the meat.
- This casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking.
