Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. Toss gently until evenly coated.
- Combine the flour and a pinch of salt in a large mixing bowl. Add the cold, cubed butter and blend until it resembles coarse crumbs. Mix in the vanilla extract and add cold water until dough forms.
- Roll out two-thirds of the dough into a circle and place it in a greased 9-inch pie dish. Add the apple filling and cover with remaining dough, sealing edges.
- Beat the egg and brush over the top crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving, potentially with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
- To reheat, place slices in the oven or microwave for a warm, fresh taste.
- Enhance flavor by mixing in other apple varieties like Fuji or Honeycrisp.
