- 1 ½ pounds ground beef or turkey
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup French onion soup or homemade caramelized onion mixture
- 1 cup shredded cheese (Swiss, Gruyère, or cheddar)
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Slowly caramelize sliced onions in a skillet with a bit of oil over medium heat until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine ground meat, toasted breadcrumbs, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, minced garlic, cooked onions, salt, and pepper. Mix until well incorporated.
- Shape the mixture into a loaf on a greased baking sheet or place in a loaf pan. Optional: spread additional caramelized onions or cheese on top.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 50-60 minutes until cooked through and golden brown.
- During the last 10 minutes of baking, sprinkle shredded cheese on top and allow to melt. Garnish with fresh herbs before serving.

- Use store-bought caramelized onion spread to save time.
- Ensure meatloaf reaches an internal temperature of 160°F for safe consumption.
- For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine or balsamic vinegar to the caramelized onions.
