Ingredients
Scale
- 4 slices of thick bread (preferably brioche or challah)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup cream cheese or sweetened mascarpone (for stuffing)
- 1/4 cup chocolate chips or Nutella (optional filling)
- For the cinnamon-sugar coating:
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- Butter or oil for frying
- Powdered sugar and syrup for serving
Instructions
- Mix cream cheese or mascarpone with one tablespoon sugar and vanilla extract; swirl in chocolate chips or Nutella if desired and set aside.
- Combine sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish for coating.
- Cut a pocket or spread filling between slices of thick bread. Pipe or spread filling evenly.
- Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and remaining sugar in a shallow bowl. Dip each stuffed slice into the mixture, ensuring itβs well-coated.
- Immediately dredge dipped bread in cinnamon-sugar mixture, pressing gently.
- Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the coated slices for 3β4 minutes per side until golden and crispy.
- Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with syrup or chocolate sauce. Add berries or banana slices for extra flavor.
Notes
- Use thick bread to prevent filling from spilling and to achieve a crispy exterior.
- Ensure the filling is evenly distributed to prevent spilling during frying.
- Reheat leftovers in the oven to retain crispiness; avoid microwaving.
- You can prepare the stuffed and dipped slices in advance and reheat before serving.
