Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450g) chicken thighs or breasts, sliced into strips
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 2 tablespoons honey or maltose for authentic sweetness
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- Red food coloring (optional for traditional appearance)
- Sesame seeds and chopped green onions for garnish
Instructions
- Combine soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, oyster sauce, Chinese five-spice, minced garlic, sesame oil, and red food coloring (if using) to make the marinade.
- Place chicken strips in a resealable bag or shallow dish, pour marinade over, and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or overnight.
- Preheat your oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Arrange marinated chicken on a wire rack over a baking tray. Roast for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway, brushing with honey for extra glaze.
- For a grilled version, preheat the grill to medium-high. Grill chicken for 6-8 minutes per side, basting with remaining marinade or honey, until charred and cooked through.
- Optional: simmer leftover marinade until thickened to create a glaze. Brush over cooked chicken for an extra sticky, glossy coating.
Notes
- For extra flavor, marinate chicken overnight.
- Use chicken thighs for juicier, more flavorful results, but breasts work with careful cooking.
- Be sure to baste frequently if grilling to keep the chicken moist and sticky.
