- 1 pound ground beef (preferably 80/20)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 1 large egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the mushroom gravy:
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce (optional)
- 2 tablespoons flour or cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
- Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly and form into 4-6 oval or round patties.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add butter or olive oil, then sauté sliced mushrooms until golden and tender. stir in flour or cornstarch, cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually add beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add soy sauce if using, simmer until thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Garnish with fresh thyme or parsley.
- Return patties to the skillet and simmer briefly to meld flavors. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
- For a vegetarian version, use plant-based patties and vegetable broth.
- Prepare the mushroom gravy ahead of time and reheat before serving for deeper flavor.
