Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the sausage until browned and crumbled. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
- Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and onion, stirring constantly to form a roux. Gradually pour in the milk, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish. Cut the refrigerated biscuits into halves or quarters and layer them at the bottom of the dish. Spread the sausage gravy evenly over the biscuit layer. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top if using.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 20-25 minutes, until the biscuits are golden and the gravy is bubbling. Remove the foil during the last 5 minutes to allow the cheese to melt and the top to crisp.
- Let the casserole rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley. Serve hot with a side of fruit or salad for a full breakfast experience.
