- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 tablespoon baking soda (for boiling)
- Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything seasoning
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, honey, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Gradually add flour and salt, mixing to form a rough dough.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
- After rising, punch down the dough, divide into equal portions, roll into ropes, and twist to shape.
- Boil water in a large pot, add baking soda, and boil each twisted bagel for about 1 minute on each side.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C), place boiled bagels on a baking sheet, and sprinkle with desired toppings.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes
- To keep bagel twists fresh, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- For longer storage, freeze in a ziplock bag for up to 3 months, reheat before serving.
