Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large tart apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch baking dish.
- In a bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Spread evenly in the prepared dish.
- In another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and salt. Add cold butter and cut in with a pastry cutter or use fingertips until crumbly.
- Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and apples are bubbling. Broil for an additional 2-3 minutes if desired for extra crispness.
Notes
- Choose tart apples for the best flavor balance.
- Chill the butter before mixing for a flaky topping.
- Add a pinch of allspice or ginger for extra warmth.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an indulgent treat.
