Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large Granny Smith or Fuji apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine sliced apples with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to evenly coat the apple slices. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and salt. Add cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Press two-thirds of the mixture into the bottom of a greased baking pan to form a crust.
- Spoon the apple filling evenly over the prepared crust. Sprinkle the remaining shortbread mixture over the apples, pressing gently to create a crispy topping.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and apples are tender. Let cool completely before slicing into bars.
Notes
- You can substitute different apple varieties such as Honeycrisp or Gala for varied flavor.
- Ensure the butter is cold to achieve a flaky, tender shortbread crust.
- For gluten-free options, use a gluten-free flour blend.
- Add nuts or dried fruits like walnuts, pecans, cranberries, or raisins for extra texture and flavor.
